Is the Virgin Birth Possible and Essential to the Faith?

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”

Luke 1:34 NASB

Jesus was not the Son of God because He was born of a virgin.

Jesus was born of a virgin because He was and is the Son of God.

Luke 1:20-38 NASB

The virgin birth is not incidental but _foundational.

There is absolutely no hope of _salvation_ apart from the virgin birth of Jesus.

1). The mystery of Jesus’ birth, _sacred_.

(31, V35)

Why Mary?

 Ordinary

For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.

Luke 1:48

Why Mary?

 Servant

And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Luke 1:38

Virgin

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”

Luke 1:34

Why a virgin birth?

-Supernatural

Why a virgin birth?

-Redeeming humanity

Two sides of Jesus

He was just like us    He was nothing like us

Born of a woman        Born of a virgin

Walk on earth        He was from above

Son of Mary         Son of God; The only begotten Son

“Friend”     King of kings; Lord of lords

Little children loved Him & He drew them close    He baffles the greatest minds

He is like us in birth     born of a woman

He is unlike us     born of a virgin

Why a virgin birth?

God’s initiative

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.

Like 1:31

How can this be- is the virgin birth biologically possible??

Yes

For nothing will be impossible with God.

Luke 1:37

2). The ministry of Jesus’ birth, Saving.

(Luke 1:31-33, Luke 2:10-14)

The incarnation (God being made flesh) and the virgin birth were necessary for our salvation.

Jesus came as He did (born of a virgin) to be what He was (sinless) to do what He did (die a substitutionary death) so that we might become sons and daughters of God!

The virgin birth of Jesus is _Good News_.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people;

Luke 2:10

Bottomline:Can a person reject the Virgin Birth and be a Christian? No! Christianity is not a collection of random truths, that any one truth can be dropped. It is truth- the whole truth. God never says, “Pick and choose what you want to believe.”
