The Spirit of Pride

Pride goeth before destruction, And an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud. 

Proverbs 16:18-19 KJV

The sin that corrupted Lucifer in heaven was  self-generated pride . 

Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

Ezekiel 28:15 KJV

Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

Terms for a haughty spirit:

 Pride 

  • Excessive self-esteem.
  • A strong sense of being better than others.

 Prideful 

  • Living independently of God.
  • Withdrawing from others because of feelings of self-sufficiency.

 Vain Glory 

  • Not honoring God (who deserves it) or others who might deserve it. 

 Vanity 

  • An excessive expression of accomplishments and worth or attraction.

 Arrogance 

  • Scorning people that are not the same intellect, nationality, worth or morals.

 Arrogant 

  • Exaggeration of abilities they do not possess but think they do. “Better than thou”

How does God feel about a haughty spirit?

  • God hates pride.

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, And the froward mouth, do I hate.

Proverbs 8:13 KJV

  • Abomination

These six things doth the LORD hate: Yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, Proverbs 6:16-17 KJV

Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: Though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

Proverbs 16:5 KJV

Abomination means:

  • strong disdain
  • intolerance
  • repugnance
  • extreme disgust

The spirit of haughtiness is not a demonic spirit but a  satanic spirit .

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

John 8:44 NIV

Job 41

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

1. A prideful spirit will be  uncontrollable/untamable .

1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? Or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? 2 Canst thou put an hook into his nose? Or bore his jaw through with a thorn?

2. A prideful spirit will not need prayer.

3 Will he make many supplications unto thee? Will he speak soft words unto thee? 

Job 41:3 KJV

4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

Psalm 10:4 KJV

29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting.

3. A prideful spirit will not honor relationships.

4. A prideful spirit will not be a  servant.

7 But emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

5. A prideful spirit will not be corrected.
